On 22 July, 2003, OSI took six of our Dupnitza kids (Vyara, Kamelia, Ina, Gergana, Dimiter, and Kostadine) on one-day excursion to Veliko Tarnovo and Shipka, both in Central Bulgaria. It was a long day, as we departed from Dupnitza at 6am and returned after midnight, after driving 700 km. It was also very hot! -but the kids didn't complain and had a great time. Below is a map of our excursion and lots of photos taken during the day. Enjoy! |

From 1185-1393, The Citadel at Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Tsardom. It is one of the most important historical sites in Bulgaria. The city itself is very picturesque and pleasant, nestled on a river in the rugged foothills. Click on the photos for a larger image... Shipka Pass is where, in August 1877, Russian and Bulgarian troops defeated the Turkish troops in the defining battle of Bulgaria's liberation from Turkish rule. The monument itself is giant and impressive, with hundreds of granite steps leading up to it from the pass below. The location is splendid, atop a barren mountain top, with fantastic views of the Valley of the Roses below. Click on the photos for a larger image... The excursion to Veliko Tarnovo and Shipka was made possible by donations from Rob Wentink of the Netherlands and Betty Clark of the US, and by funding from each of the kids' individual sponsors: Peter Gehrke - Vyara Thanks also to Nicolai Pilev and Pavel Voinov for chaperoning. Thanks to all of you for a wonderful, educational, and memorable day for the kids! If you are interested in funding a similar project for OSI children, please contact OSI |
